Moments: Life under the lenses 1950–2022

Moments: Life under the lenses 1950 – 2022 is an exhibition and publication featuring artworks from six different background photographers worldwide. They have captured and explored numerous moments of lives, from them or others. Each, with its unique approach, illustrated the stories behind them through photographs. Open space and floating texts are designed in the catalog to achieve the topic's subtle, peaceful, and tranquil concept. It is like a movie, a tale, and a poem threading the emotion and meaning together, inviting the audience to join the journey to experience the moments of existence.

Exploring Typefaces and Styles

Before starting the catalog,  I explored the typeface and named the title“Moments Life under the lenses 1950-2022.”  The reason that I chose “Moments” as my title is that to me, every photograph is like someone or something’s life that lives in that little frame. Like capturing and freezing that particular “moment,” time, and space. A feeling of tranquility and calmness.

Then, I played around with different layouts to explore the style that I wanted to go for.

As I laid out my texts and photography, I felt stuck and confused. Because the direction that I was going for was not the style I wanted for the book. It feels crowded and quite energetic.

So, in the middle of the term, I decided to toss everything away and restart the entire project from scratch.

By researching again, I found a specific style of booklets with calmer color schemes, smaller types, and vast space.

Referring to the style, I realized that floating, scattering types, and lighter colors might help with the calming mood I want to achieve.

Eventually, I came out with the book cover in desaturated, nude color with a designed lock-up for the title in a small size. Blurred images create a calm and serene mood. Then, the rest of the catalog's contents follow the style.

One thing I learned from this project is that your final piece may not always end with your first concept. Don’t be afraid to start over, even in the middle of the process. Go with what your heart tells you. Always explore until you feel satisfied with it.
